My opinion is better!

So we watched a video today in class, and the main question was "Is the United States the greatest country in the world? Why or why not?"
So everybody thought of their answer and what they wanted to say. Almost everybody expressed the same opinion and the conversation continued for about a minute.

Then shit hit the fan.

What went from a simple conversation over a controversial topic turned into an angry debate. People were putting others down, some were saying comments without thinking if it made sense or not, others were just down right offensive and rude.
I was very shocked at how some people can not have a simple discussion without acting like children.

Thank the lord Mr. Sweeney made us play a game of Taboo. You could cut the tension in the room with a knife.
I am very disappointed in my fellow students.

  1. I guess some of us haven't fully developed a mental understanding that arguing and fighting does not fix anything. Arguing just makes everything worse than what it already is.

  2. Fighting can solve problems, example the revolutionary war, the civil war, etc.. and as for arguing, its a part of life. People will always argue because there will never be a point in time where everybody sees eye to eye. The thing people need to "develop a mental understanding" for is that just because others have opposing views, does not mean it is personal. In order to have a debate (worth having) the people involved need to be properly informed, desensitized, and a strong mediator should be present.

  3. The topic itself is not right, there is 90% chance that it would bring a serious argument but of course as an adult controlling anger during argument is something we should learn.

  4. - Unfortunately some individuals don't understand the difference between a heated discussion/ debate from a heated argument. In a discussion/ debate person(s) are expressing their opinion in an adult, and constructive way while listening to the opposing person(s) versus an argument where person(s) are screaming and raising their voices at each other, not thinking, or listening.

  5. Many students feel very strong about their opinions and they feel like they have to fight their way through in order for people to listen to them when in reality they're just being childish and rude and not respecting other individual's thoughts and feelings.
